This study investigates how Human Cytomegalovirus (CMV) affects natural killer (NK) cells and contributes to the instability of atherosclerotic plaques. The researchers identified specific memory-like NK cell subsets in CMV-positive patients that could serve as biomarkers to detect early signs of carotid plaque destabilization. By analyzing blood and plaque samples from 64 patients using flow cytometry and bioinformatics, they found NK cell subsets with similar tissue-residency markers in both CMV-positive and -negative individuals. These findings may support better risk stratification and patient monitoring.
